Fundoscopy training programme
This new training programme has been designed to develop knowledge and skill in fundus biomicroscopy assessment using relevant diagnostic lenses.

The programme will support learners to expand their clinical role in a variety of sub-specialist Ophthalmic settings. It will build on existing knowledge and skills, with a particular focus on basic fundoscopy skills to aid the learner to support the diagnosis of ophthalmic patients.

Course structure
The Fundoscopy training programme is a a 6-month programme comprising:

An initial two study days combining tutorials and fundoscopy clinical skills training.
A 6-month period of local work-place based training involving completion of assessments and logbook
A final clinical skills assessment day.
The study days will include theory about the anatomy and physiology of the fundus, slit lamp bio microscopy assessment, common fundoscopy findings (retina, macular and disc) and further investigative techniques. There will also be a practical clinical skills workshop on both days.

Who is this programme day for?
The Fundoscopy training programme is for Ophthalmic Healthcare Professionals including Ophthalmic nurses, Orthoptists and other allied professionals working in secondary care in an enhanced role.

Accreditation
A certificate of completion will be awarded on successful completion of the final assessment.

Start date
The initial study days for the first cohort to join this programme will take place on Tuesday 19 and Wednesday 20 November 2024.

A further cohort will commence with their initial study days on Wednesday 2 and Thursday 3 July 2025.

There are 10 places available in each cohort.

Application criteria - important
To apply for this programme you must:

Have a post graduate qualification in Ophthalmology (or equivalent)
Be confident in the use of a slit lamp for anterior eye examination
Have access to clinical supervision in your workplace to complete the work-place based learning elements of the programme (a nominated supporting clinical supervisor in your workplace must be identified before joining this programme)
Have the opportunity to perform fundoscopy as part of your role, on completion of this programme
