Saturday 7 October saw Sight Sciences hold their inaugural UK Glaucoma Fellows Academy training day.
Delegates and faculty gathered at the Leonardo Hotel in Birmingham for a mix of lectures, education and roundtable discussion with attendees drawn from glaucoma specialists currently completing fellowships across the UK. The specialist panel were Dr. Freda Sii, Ms. Fizza Mushtaq, Prof. Peter Shah, and Prof. Imran Masood.
Sessions included themes around: optimising patient safety through systems, building wellbeing & resilience, decision-making in glaucoma treatment, and the importance of the first 100 days as a consultant.
Professor Peter Shah summarised the feelings of the faculty by commenting, "This is the first time that we have approached the subject of optimising outcomes and patient safety through a holistic approach.
We covered everything from individual decision-making, right through to the creation of safe systems in which to care for patients. Emphasising the critical elements of building resilience and wellbeing as a young Consultant was particularly important. The faculty shared their experiences, advice, and pearls of wisdom by creating a 'safe space' within the meeting in which challenging subjects could be discussed openly.
We hope that this approach will support our future young Consultants as they make the difficult transition from Fellowship training to a busy Consultant job. We are keen to run future events that build on this solid foundation of skills, enabling our delegates to develop safe and effective glaucoma surgical services. Thanks to the Sight Sciences team for supporting this innovative, nurturing and high-impact education."
Sight Sciences UK Sales Manager, Sherry Knowlden who arranged the event said, “We were delighted with the enthusiasm and feedback from the meeting. It is wonderful to be able to support the glaucoma consultants of the future with an interactive and educational event such as this. We extend a huge thank you to our exceptional faculty and all those who attended.”
