The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Ophthalmic Nursing Forum (ONF) is a long-standing professional network within the RCN that is dedicated to highlighting the significance, scope, and value of ophthalmic nursing. Our annual conference is scheduled for 16 November 2024, from 09:00–15:45 at the RCN Headquarters, 20 Cavendish Square, Marylebone, London W1G 0RN. Pricing for the event is £125 + VAT for RCN members and £185 + VAT for non-members.

This year’s event will feature an exciting array of speakers and educators who are leaders in their respective fields. Some highlights include: Catherine Garrott, Senior Nurse Specialist, sharing insights on leadership; Adam Mapani, Nurse Consultant, presenting evolving nursing roles in a digitally enhanced care pathways in the medical retina service; Helen Lada, ICS lead for Advanced Clinical Practice, discussing ‘Advanced clinical practice: How to access programmes to further your career’; and Professor Roxanne Crosby-Nwaobi, Lead Nurse for Research / NIHR Clinical Lecturer, presenting on ‘Ophthalmic nursing research’.

Attendees will also have the chance to participate in a panel discussion led by the ONF steering committee: Tendai Gwenhure, Rebecca Turner, Catherine Garrot, Grace Eni, Regina Tavengwa and Jem Bautista.

This one-day conference is open to all professions and is designed to benefit both new and experienced nurses, as well as other healthcare professionals involved in caring for patients with ophthalmic conditions, regardless of the sector or setting. It's also a fantastic opportunity to connect with like-minded colleagues, exchange ideas, and reflect on best practices. Seven hours of CPD hours can also be accrued.

The focus of the conference will be advancing practice in ophthalmic nursing, with the sessions and learning outcomes tailored to this goal, including:

  • Gain insight into advanced clinical practice and the evolving roles of ophthalmic nurses.
  • Identify and explore current challenges in ophthalmic services delivery and the role of innovation and digital solutions to improving service delivery and enhance patient care.
  • Evaluate the role of leadership within an ophthalmic clinical context.
  • Define research, explain the research process and the importance of nursing research for evidence-based practice. 
  • Discuss and debate the current and future training and education needs of ophthalmic nurses.
