Welcome to the 11th episode of Beyond 2020, the video series from Andean Medical Mission | Bolivian Medical Charity that looks at strategies to eliminate avoidable blindness in countries with developing eyecare services and shares ideas and solutions to common difficulties in working abroad.

In this video, the Andean Medical Mission discuss possible solutions to try and address the burden of blindness from glaucoma in the Bolivian Amazon. The incidence of primary open angle glaucoma worldwide is 1.5%. Therefore, there are 7500 patients who may be at risk of blindness in the department of Beni (population 500,000), northern Bolivia, if nothing is done to address this disease. There are many challenges to finding the right solution, taking into account the many challenges of a long rainy season, poor road networks, inadequate supply of medicines and lack of ophthalmic services.
