For years, ZEISS has been supporting the global World Sight Day effort from IAPB, promoting contributions to eye and vision care for people around the world. With a full portfolio of instruments, platforms, applications, workflows, eyeglass lenses and IOLs, ZEISS’s mission is to provide ophthalmologists, optometrists, opticians, and other eyecare professionals with everything they need to provide their patients, at any age, with the best possible eye and vision care.

Some of the stories highlighted this year on the ZEISS World Sight Day website include:

  • Restoring sight for a five-year-old cataract patient: Five-year-old Buyandeleger from Mongolia was born with a cataract in her right eye. The Orbis Flying Eye Hospital team stepped in to help give Buyandeleger her full sight, using a ZEISS IOLMaster 500 to select the right lens implant.
  • Rare eye conditions in newborn babies: The ZEISS CLARUS 700 empowered the atlas of retinopathy of prematurity and other neonatal diseases, providing unparalleled insights into rare eye conditions in newborns to safeguard infants' vision and prevent vision loss in India.

CLARUS™ 700 combines ultra-widefield UWF imaging, excellent image quality, and a full range of fundus imaging modalities, including fundus angiography.

  • Enabling life-long eye health: Diagnostic devices from ZEISS help the Fiat Lux Federation diagnose patients old and young at the Boa Visão Eye Hospital in Mozambique, educating parents about their children’s eye health and providing young and old patients the critical knowledge necessary to help preserve their eyesight.
  • IOFF Fellowship: Since 2020, Carl Zeiss Meditec has supported the International Ophthalmological Fellowship Foundation e.V. (IOFF). During placements lasting several months at hospitals with state-of-the-art equipment, doctors can improve their skills in ophthalmology and later harness the knowledge gained for their work in their native countries.

“At ZEISS Medical Technology, we have long held a deep commitment to supporting the mission of World Sight Day and the vital efforts of ophthalmologists around the world who are helping to improve the vision and eye health of children,” said Euan S Thomson, PhD, President of Ophthalmology Business and Head of the Digital Business Unit at ZEISS Medical Technology. “Working together with healthcare professionals, we’re helping to digitally transform and personalize treatment pathways, making eyecare more efficient and available for patients of all ages everywhere.”
