The aim of this study was to investigate choroidal changes in the short-term by looking at the choroidal vascular layer after horizontal strabismus surgery. This was a retrospective study of 27 patients: 12 females and 15 males with mean age of 16.7 ±13.5 years. Mean spherical equivalent was 0.125 ±0.50D. Preoperatively, mean total choroidal area was 599686 ±113451, luminal area 394258 ±67259, stromal area 209180 ±47723 and choroidal vascular index 0.66 ±0.02. There was a decrease in choroidal vascular index and increase in total choroidal area and stromal area which was significant at day one but returned to preoperative values at one week postoperatively. This study was limited by its retrospective design and small sample size. A prospective larger study is required with comparison of one vs two muscle surgery. The authors propose choroidal vascular index as a better marker than choroidal thickness when determining choroidal changes after strabismus surgery.
