Paediatric Ophthalmology / Strabismus
This review considers the range of infections occurring with strabismus surgery. Extraocular infections include conjunctiva, sub Tenon’s abscess and orbital cellulitis. Intraocular infection includes endophthalmitis. Prevention of infection and risk factors includes the issue of scleral penetration and use of preoperative Povidone-Iodine. The authors highlight the importance of awareness for infection. A normal examination in the early postoperative phase does not mean infection will not occur. Patient and parent awareness is, therefore, also important. This provides a useful overview table for endophthalmitis review.
