‘PDI check’ is a vision assessment game developed for the autostereoscopic upper screen on the Nintendo 3DS XL game console. Version 0.2.5 emphasises quick assessment of monocular acuity, stereoacuity and red-green colour deficiency. The purpose of this study was to confirm the clinical validity of this game plus comparative timing. The study included 77 subjects aged six to 62 years; 12 with suppression. Sensitivity and specificity were 90 and 85% for stereopsis assessment, 80 and 99% for deuteranopia, and 67 and 96% for screening deep binocular suppression. For 22 abnormal patients, PDI check was quicker than conventional screening (median 136 versus 234 seconds). It was also quicker for normal screening (77 versus 186 seconds). PDI was able to screen for poor near visual acuity, suppression, stereopsis and red / green colour deficiency two minutes quicker than conventional screening. The results correlate well with those of conventional static clinical tests. Further work is needed with larger sample sizes, with a greater age range and with a greater range of abnormal visual disorders.
